News & Events: Sea Ducks on the Arctic Coast of Norway

Monday 13th May 2013 |

It's been an ambition of mine for many years to photograph Eider and Long Tailed Ducks in Northen Norway, so this year in March I made that long dreamed of trip and it didn't disappoint!  I made the trip with old friend and photographer Chris Knights from Norfolk and a photographer and farmer friend of his Nicholas Watts from the Fens. We flew into Northern Finland then hired a car and drove the 300 kms to Varanger Fiord where we  stayed in a little town called Vardo for 4 days, the winter was late with a lot of snow and severe blizzards on the first day, which made travel interesting! We got good shots of King Eiders and Stellers Eiders in flight from the outer harbour entrance, then two offshore boat trips gave us great views of huge flocks of King and Common Eiders. These proved a challenge to photograph from a smallish boat in a heavy sea, but we did get a few memorable shots. After Vardo we drove to Batsfiord, a few hours drive to the west. We stayed here for four nights and were rewarded with great shots of flocks of Stellers Eiders on the ice and Long Tailed Ducks in the harbour. The King Eiders were amazingly confiding so close ups of these stunning birds were not difficult.  It was a most memorable and productive trip.....where next? Maybe Alaska for wintering Emperor Geese, another dream trip!
